A Few Birds...The Basics of Watching Birds

Naturalist and photographer Chris Petrak will introduce common resident birds and visiting migrants, where and when to see them, and nuggets about their life and habits, including familiar birds such as: the “poor sam", the “perchickoree,” the witchety", the “peter-peter,” and the “devil down head” (also known as the “ank ank") and more.  There will be a brief primer on the tools of birdwatching and tips about backyard bird feeders.

… Plus answers to nagging questions: What’s that big black bird up in the sky? … Do geese fly south for winter? Is the robin a sign of spring? Why does the cardinal bang against my window? Sprinkled in will be some of his OMG birds, those feathered wonders which bring a spontaneous gasp of awe when observed.

Chris Petrak lived for 20 years in a 200-year old farm/village house in southeastern Vermont. He was a most-of-the time watcher of birds in the fields, forests, back roads, and mountain trails of the Green Mountain state. A self-taught naturalist, he became the “bird man” as he wrote about his experiences and research for local newspapers and was a popular speaker for many groups and organizations in southeastern Vermont. He has published four books about birds and birdwatching, the most recent being “A Few Birds: Alexander Wilson, John James Audubon, and the Beginning of American Ornithology.”
